We have to dig
Deep.

A tight grip on memories we must
Keep.

We must allow ourselves to
Weep.

We can collapse in a
Heap.

We have to be able to
Sleep.

This pattern of rhyming is feeling
Cheap.

In humor our souls we must
Steep.

P'DEMIC RAIN

My stomach is churning,
Tears live there.
They are multiplying,
Rising up;

My chest feels heavy.
One tear weighs nothing-
Several? Tons.
They are jamming up in my throat,
A constant lump.
My face hurts. My teeth hurt.
Bags under my eyes-
They are full.
Tears reach my lower lids.
Constantly.
They. Must. Go.
Flow.
So....

Thanks, I needed that.

Waist Full

The length of time it takes for us to do a
                                   chore
Expands to the time available-no less, no
                                   more.
What if the same applies to our leggings
                             waistband
And to that elastic stretchy space our waists
                               expand?

FIGURES by Ellen Hyner

My scale and I are feuding--it is mean to me,
Starting with digital numbers that are easier to see.
I have moved that scoundrel all over the room,
Its message is most often doom and gloom.

It knows that number sets the tone for the day
Yet it never tries to have things go my way.
Before I get on it I do logical things
Like remove my hair clips and, of course, my rings.

I never weigh myself coming out of the shower,
Water retention can last well up to an hour.
Moisturizer? Forget it--make-up, too.
We're talking ounces here, my scale has no clue.

When I want a snack, I'll weigh myself before,
To decide if it'll be chips, or from the veggie drawer.
After weeks away my scale will show
How my vacation really did go.

As I get older and my eyes start to fail,
Please don't surprise me with a talking scale!

FREEDOM by Ellen Hyner

We live our lives worried about how we look.
Think of all your critics and what they took.
But as we grow...older, we always have a choice,
We should embrace this Freedom and openly rejoice.

In every decade we have fears to face,
All of which bring us to our current place.
We've worried about partners, children and career;
We've tried to keep our Parents and Offspring near.

It is still unknown, what lies ahead,
But let's get rid of the weight of dread.
Let's release the weight of expectation
And plan our Future like we plan a vacation.
